“Pupils are provided with responsibilities across the school. Pupils undertake leadership roles exceptionally well and told us how much they enjoy the opportunities”
Ofsted 2019
In Year 3 we build on the skills acquired over previous years, as well as preparing pupils for their time in the years to come. In English we concentrate on grammatical and spelling skills, using them to build and develop pupils’ writing. We support and encourage wide reading, alongside a love for books. In Maths we consolidate times tables and number bonds, and focus on the skills required to apply what has been learnt to word problems, including multi- step questions. Cross-curricular links are emphasised through Science, Art, History, Music and IT and pupils perform a year group play to their parents in the Spring Term.
Throughout Year 4, we aim to develop the children’s independence in all areas of the curriculum. In Maths, pupils are introduced to long multiplication and long division. They develop their understanding of telling the time by using 24 hour notation, problem solving skills and reading timetables. In English, they study a variety of genres including newspaper reports, myths and legends, historical stories and poetry.
The children consolidate their knowledge through lessons which focus on grammar, spelling, dictation, comprehension, creative writing and handwriting. In Comprehension, the children begin to use inference and deduction to answer questions. Regular reading is essential in supporting the development of this new skill. Children experience a range of other subjects such as Computing, RE, Citizenship, History, Geography, Science, PE, Games, Music, Drama, French and Art/DT.
