This half term, Year 3 are immersing themselves in the fascinating world of the Romans. Over the past couple of weeks, the children have been busy designing and crafting their very own Roman shields! Drawing inspiration from historical designs and symbols, the children have carefully painted their shields, bringing Roman patterns and colours to life. The project combined creativity with historical learning, giving the children a hands-on connection to Roman culture and military practices.
Once their shields were complete, the children stepped into the roles of Roman soldiers. They used their shields to practice famous Roman military formations, such as the “tortoise” (testudo), the wedge, and the defensive wall. Marching together in formation, they learned how these strategies helped the Romans become one of the most successful armies in history. The experience has been both educational and exciting, allowing students to develop teamwork, coordination, and a deeper understanding of Roman warfare. We are very proud of the children’s hard work and creativity — Ave, Year 3 legionnaires!
