In science, Year 4 have been learning about sound. As a conclusion to our topic, the children created their own instruments (using household recycling), paying special attention to how the pitch could be changed.
To change the pitch on their guitars, they knew to change the thickness of the rubber bands to achieve high and low pitch, or to tighten the rubber bands. For the ‘dhol’ (percussion instrument), different thickness of paper and card were used as well as how tightly it lay across the top of the drum. The pan pipes were cut to different lengths, again to achieve different levels of pitch.
Year 4 have really enjoyed learning about how sound is transmitted to the ear, as well applying their knowledge to the creation of their own instruments.
