On Friday 21st February it was National ‘Mother Language Day’ and as this fell during our half-term holiday, our school held this event on Wednesday 26th February. The children engaged in numerous activities celebrating languages and promoting international understanding.
International Mother Language Day was declared by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in November 1999 to promote and protect the diversity of languages spoken throughout the world.
Children (and staff) were invited to come to school dressed in the national colours or traditional dress of a country of their choice. The event provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the different cultures and traditions represented around the world, and a thought-provoking day.
Sensai Basil our Judo instructor came and gave a demonstration, and the children were able to join in. They listened intently to his instructions and explanations of the customs of Judo.
