During the morning of Thursday 30th January, Year 5 took part in a ‘Haberdashers’ Maths Masterclass’ workshop that was run by Mrs Harte, Haberdashers’ Maths teacher and three Lower Sixth form pupils from Haberdashers’ Boys’ School. One of the students was a former pupil at Radlett Prep.
The event started in the Blue Room, with the entire year group taking part in mental arithmetic exercises that involved working together in groups to create number sequences, formed by adding and subtracting negative numbers; other activities involved fractions, decimals and percentages. The exercises encouraged the children to work as a team and to help each other in order to arrive at the correct answer at the end of the activity.
After break, each class worked separately on different activities. Within each, the pupils were divided into groups of 3 to solve a variety of mathematical problems. The children thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to stretch their mathematical knowledge and understanding, and use deeper thinking strategies to arrive at the correct answers.
